History
In 1931, researcher Lucy Wills identified folate's critical role in the human body's biochemical functioning. Wills discovered folate could prevent anemia in pregnant women and put its benefits into practice using brewer's yeast. It wasn't until the late 1930s and 40s that folate was extracted from yeast. Bob Stokstad extracted the pure crystalline form of folate in 1943, which was used as a base for an anti-cancer drug called Aminopterin.
