History
Carnitine (a key compound that drives metabolic function) was discovered in 1905 as a significant component of muscle. Its structure was characterized by 1927, and in 1952 L-carnitine—the isomer found in all animal and plant tissues—was shown to be essential for the growth of mealworms. Without carnitine, the mealworms were unable to use fat stores when put into starvation. Irving B. Fritz then demonstrated how carnitine stimulates fatty acid oxidation in the liver, which led to the finding of Acetyl-L-Carnitine’s primary function as we know it today: transporting essential long-chain fatty acids across cell membranes to produce energy.
