History
Rickets was known as the "English Disease" when it ran rampant throughout the United Kingdom, causing weakened and soft bones in infants and young children. Biochemist and nutritionist Sir Edward Mellanby hypothesized that it might be caused by a Vitamin A deficiency as he was able to cure the disease with cod liver oil. American biochemist Elmer McCollum then tested the theory by bubbling oxygen through cod liver oil which destroyed Vitamin A, yet the elixir still cured rickets. The discovery was a new vitamin that cured the disease: Vitamin D.
