History
Joseph Black was the first person to recognize magnesium as an element in 1755, but there were many chemists after him who would discover various forms of magnesium. Thomas Henry reported magnesium silicate in 1789, where it was used to make pipes for smoking tobacco. In 1792, metallic magnesium was produced by Anton Rupprecht by heating magnesia with charcoal. Humphry Davy performed electrolysis of magnesium oxide and isolated a tiny fraction of magnesium in 1808. Then, in 1831, French scientist Antoine-Alexandre-Brutus Bussy studied the metal’s property when he formulated a sizable amount of magnesium by reacting magnesium chloride with potassium.
