The word Greek word “Silybum” (meaning “tassel” or “tuft”) was mentioned as a ‘thistle-like medicinal plant’ in physician and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides’ book De Materia Medica in the first century AD (the name referenced the tassel-like flowers and white spots on its leaves).
